Common Metric Project
an Opportunity to create Change!
New York City and New York State Universal Prekindergarten (UPK) programs are eligible to participate in the groundbreaking Common Metric Project. The majority of UPK programs in NYC and NYS use the Work Sampling System™ (WSS), Teaching Strategies GOLD® or the HighScope Child Observation Record (COR) for child assessment in Pre-K classrooms. What makes the Common Metric Project so exciting is that whether a program is using WSS, GOLD or COR, a Common Metric will allow NYC and NYS to determine how all UPK students are progressing toward meeting both the NYS Prekindergarten Foundation for the Common Core and the Head Start Child Development and Learning Framework. The ability to understand students’ progress toward the Prekindergarten Common Core standards will help differentiate classroom and professional development supports.
What has been happening in NYC?
In New York City, there are more than 280 teachers from across 140 sites participating in the groundbreaking Common Metric Project. Education directors and teachers who have joined the project have been very enthusiastic and have been gaining a lot through their participation. Some benefits noted by participants are:
- Each teacher works with his/her own teacher support specialist to receive assistance with assessments; specialists are on-call for teachers Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm.
- Teachers learn new time saving strategies to maximize classroom observation and assessment efforts.
- The project offers teachers more lesson plan ideas to effectively assess children.
- The project provides technical assistance to all teachers (i.e., navigating through on assessment websites quickly and efficiently).
- Directors have experienced an increase in teacher competency and observational assessment skills.
