Group Family Day Care Assistant

The Group Family Day Care Assistant:
  • Is an employee of a Group Family Day Care Provider
  • Works in the residence of a Group Family Day Care Provider

The Group Family Day Care Assistant needs:

  • Knowledge of child development, especially of the young child
  • General education knowledge including speaking, reading, and writing
  • Child behavior management skills
  • To be a cooperative co-worker
  • To follow directions and work independently
  • To interact positively with children
  • To maintain self-control
Academic and Experience Requirements
Be at least 18 years of age
AND

2 years of expereince caring for children 6 weeks - 12 years of age

 

(Experience can mean child-rearing as well as paid and unpaid experience in caring for children.)

OR

1 year of experience caring for children 6 weeks - 12 years of age

AND

6 hours of training/education in early childhood development

Ongoing Training/Professional Development

  • Each full time employee must complete a minimum of 30 hours of training every 2 years.
  • 15 hours of such training must be received during the first 6 months of the program's first year of licensure or during the person's first 6 months of employment by the program.
  • Training must address the following topics:
    1. Principles of childhood development
    2. Nutrition and health needs of children
    3. Child day care program development
    4. Safety and security procedures, including communication between parents and staff
    5. Business-record maintenance and management
    6. Child abuse and maltreatment identification and prevention
    7. Statutes and regulations pertaining to child care
    8. Statutes and regulation pertaining to child abuse and maltreatment
    9. Shaken Baby Syndrome
    10. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)

NOTE:

  • If the Group Family Day Care Assistant plans to give out medication to children in their program, completion of NYS Medication Administration Training (MAT) and Infant/Child CPR/First Aid is mandatory. Ask your employer before taking the course. More information
