Infant/Toddler Teacher – children younger than 2 years of age
Setting: Child Care/Day Care/Preschool
AA/AS/AAS degree in Early Childhood Education |
OR |
Child Development Associate Credential (CDA) AND 1 year documented paid work experience with infant/toddlers and a study plan leading to an associate´s degree within 7 years. |
OR |
High School diploma or Equivalency Certificate (GED) AND 1 year documented paid work experience with infant/toddlers and a study plan leading to an associate´s degree within 7 years. |
Ongoing Training/Professional Development
- Each full time employee must complete a minimum of 30 hours of training every 2 years.
- 15 hours of such training must be received during the first 6 months of the program's first year of licensure or during the person's first 6 months of employment by the program.
- Training must address the following topics:
- Principles of childhood development
- Nutrition and health needs of children
- Child day care program development
- Safety and security procedures, including communication between parents and staff
- Business-record maintenance and management
- Child abuse and maltreatment identification and prevention
- Statutes and regulations pertaining to child care
- Statutes and regulation pertaining to child abuse and maltreatment
- Shaken Baby Syndrome
- Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)
Setting: Early Head Start - Infants Only
Academic and Experience Requirements
AA/AS/AAS degree in Early Childhood Education |
OR |
Child Development Associate Credential (CDA) |
OR |
High School diploma or Equivalency Certificate (GED) AND 1 year documented paid work experience with infants |
Head Start/Early Head Start teachers also:
- Plan/deliver Head Start Services in center and home-based settings
- Carry out record keeping requirements
- Need experience in a human services setting, including working with low-income children and families

- Staff qualifications are for New York City Head Start programs and are required by the NYC Department of Health and exceed Federal Head Start staff.
