Director

With strong leadership, a Director:

  • Oversees all aspects of the program
  • Supervises staff, curriculum, and facilities
  • Directs program operations
  • Develops and manages a budget

A Director is responsible for:

  • Compliance with state and local regulations, and program policies
  • Developing policies and operating procedures based on mandated performance standards
  • Coordinating staff projects

Directors have knowledge of:

  • Appropriate early childhood practices
  • The educational process
  • Personnel management, including program planning
  • Operations and evaluation
  • Sales, marketing and media outreach

A Director uses skills such as:

  • Organization and critical thinking
  • Social perceptiveness
  • Information management

A Director has the ability to:

  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Create a healthy environment for children, staff and families
  • Receive and provide feedback
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Motivate others

A Director has:

  • Experience in a human services setting
  • Awareness of and sensitivity to cultural issues and local community practices

Setting: Day Care/Childcare Center (Programs with less than 40 Children)

Academic and Experience Requirements

Master's Degree in Education

AND

Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education/Special Education

AND

NYS Teaching Certificate in Early Childhood Education/Elementary Education

AND

Courses mandated by NYC Health Code:

  • A semester course in the sociological, philosophical, or historical foundations of education, and
  • A semester course in educational developmental psychology, at least one of which shall be in child development, and
  • A semester course in instructional methods and materials including instructions in teaching the basic skills, at least one of which shall be on the pre-kindergarten or kindergarten level, and
  • A semester course in parent education and community relations

AND

2 years of classroom experience as a group teacher

Ongoing Training/Professional Development

  • Written training plans are in place at individual childcare centers

Setting: Infant Program

Academic and Experience Requirements

2 years of paid classroom experience as a group teacher (With at least 1 year as a teacher/caregiver in charge of children under 3 years of age)

AND

Master's Degree in Education

OR

Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education

AND

NYS Teaching Certificate in Early Childhood Education

Ongoing Training/Professional Development

  • Written training plans are in place at individual childcare centers

Setting: Early Head Start

Academic and Experience Requirements

Master's Degree in Early Childhood Education

AND

Permanent NYS Teaching Certificate

AND

1 year experience as a teacher or caregiver in charge of infants or toddlers

Ongoing Training/Professional Development

  • Written training plans are in place at individual childcare centers

Setting: Head Start

Academic and Experience Requirements

Master's Degree in related field

AND

Permanent NYS Teaching Certificate

AND

1 year paid administrative/supervisory experience

OR

2 years experience in child care for children under 6 years of age

Ongoing Training/Professional Development

  • Written training plans are in place at individual childcare centers

NOTE:

  • In a Head Start setting, either the Director or Educational Director is required to have a NYS Teaching Certificate. Contact individual Head Start location you are applying to.
  • Current and former Early Head Start and Head Start parents must receive preference for employment vacancies for which they are qualified.
  • Staff qualifications are for NYC Head Start/Early Head Start programs and are required by the NYC Department of Health and exceed Federal Head Start/Early Head Start staff qualifications.
