Optometrists with Proven Competency as Low Vision Specialists

Low Vision Specialists are licensed Doctors of Optometry , who examine, diagnose and treat various ocular conditions that can not be fully treated by medical, surgical, conventional eyewear or contact lenses.  Working with young children with disabilities, they:

  • Use specialized testing techniques to identify the visual abilities of young children with or at risk of disabilities.
  • Provide appropriate optometric intervention to meet the unique needs of children who are blind or partially sighted.
  • Work with parents, caregivers and other professionals to create an IFSP that enables infants and toddlers with impaired vision to develop their abilities and potential by assisting in the identification of developmentally appropriate and functional interventions in natural environments that facilitate the development of various skills.
  • Help families obtain the appropriate resources for the unique needs of their children and teach them how to use the recommended optical devices
  • Guide families, teachers and other caregivers to make any necessary adaptations that facilitate children’s growth and development and contribute to IEP goals.
Academic and Experience Requirements for Doctors of Optometry with an Specialization in Low Vision
Bachelor's Degree in General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Biology or Related Field
AND
Doctorate in Optometry or Ophthalmology
AND
Specialization in Low Vision
AND
NYS Optometry Licensure
AND
Experience serving Young Children with Vision Disabilities

NOTE:

  • To obtain NYS Licensure as Optometrists, professionals must pass the National Board of Examiners in Optometry (NBEO) examination and take the NYS Mandated Courses in Child Abuse Identification & Reporting and Infection Control. Get More Information
