A Principal:
- Participates in NYC Department of Education activities
- Implements policy and procedure changes from the NYC Department Of Education
- Interacts with students in a constructive manner to encourage each individual to perform at his or her highest level
- Monitorsservices for children with special needs
- Speaks on demand to large groups of people
- Speaks clearly and briefly in oral and written communications
- Prioritizes a variety of tasks and situations as they arise
A Principal:
- Supervises the day-to-day management of educational activities
- Monitors students' educational progress
- Is in charge of staffing
- Motivates teachers and other personnel
Related responsibilities of a Principal include:
- Preparing budgets
- Managing guidance and other student services
- Evaluating performance and effectiveness of programs and staff
- Coordinating in-service training for staff
A Principal establishes and maintains effective working relationships with:
- Students, staff, and school volunteers
- Parents, parent groups, and the larger community
Permanent School Administrator and Supervisor

Master’s or Doctoral Degree in Educational Leadership or appropriate field AND NYS School Administrator and Supervisor Credential (SAS) or School District Administrator (SDA) AND Minimum of 2 years school-based approved experience in an administrative/supervisory position in a public or approved independent elementary and/or secondary school |
Provisional School Administrator and Supervisor

Bachelor’s Degree AND 18 semester hours of Graduate study in School Administration and Supervision AND 12 semester hours of additional graduate study AND NYS School Administrator and Supervisor Credential (SAS) or School District Administrator (SDA) AND Minimum of 3 years school-based approved experience in teaching, administrative/supervisory, and/or pupil personnel experience in pre K – 12th grade schools |
Ongoing Training/Professional Development
- Is based on:
- A joint plan worked out by the Principal, and consultation with the Local Instructional Supervisor
- The School’s Comprehensive Education Plan (CEP)
