Special Education Paraprofessionals

  • Assist the Early Childhood Special Education Teacher and/or the general Early Childhood Teacher in the implementation of the IEP for the young child with disabilities in the following ways:
    • Engage children with disabilities in individual or group activities developed by the teacher
    • Reinforce children’s positive behaviors by recognizing, interpreting, responding and modeling appropriate responses.
    • Promote age appropriate independence and functioning such as personal health skills, safety and self-protection
    • Guide and assist the young child with disabilities through structured routines and transitions that promote interaction, communication and learning
    • Use play and other techniques as instructed by the teacher to promote communication, comprehension, literacy and other developmentally appropriate skills
    • Aid other service providers like occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech teachers, adaptive physical education providers and other service providers in any way to meet the child’s needs and the IEP goals.

Setting: NYC Public School

Academic and Experience Requirements

High School diploma or equivalency Certificate (GED)

AND

NYS Assessment of Teaching Assistant Skills (NYSATAS) or Liberal Arts and Sciences Test (LAST)

AND

Completion of NYS Mandated Training on Child Abuse Identification & Reporting

AND

Completion of the NYS Mandated Training on School Violence Prevention and Intervention

AND

Fingerprint Clearance

AND

Experience working with families and parents in the field of education

 

Ongoing Training/Professional Development

75 hours of coursework every 5 years or other district approved activities, or equivalent, programs w/articulation agreements with teacher education initiatives are also acceptable.
