- If an Occasional Per Diem (OPD) Substitute teacher exceeds 40 days of substitute service in 1 school year, the teacher is required to take 6 credits of professional education courses unless all education requirements have been satisfied.
- These courses must be in agreement with an OPD Education Plan that is created as part of the process of obtaining an Occasional Per Diem Certificate (OPDC).
- Completion of the 6 credits of professional education by August 31st (of the school year in which the 40 days was exceeded) is required for renewal of the OPDC for the following school year.
NOTE:
- Those wishing to serve as day-to-day Substitute Teachers must be nominated for an Occasional Per Diem Certificate (OPDC) by a principal or a Regional Operation Center to serve on a day-to-day basis only.
- The person holding an OPDC is known as a day-to-day substitute or Occasional Per Diem teacher who may serve in any NYC public school at any grade level and in any subject area.
- To obtain an OPDC, take the following steps:
- Obtain a Nomination Letter and Nomination Form from the Principal or Superintendent
- Obtain your official transcripts from all institutions of higher education you have attended
- Obtain a $50 Postal Money Order
- Go to the Regional Operation Center
- Fill out necessary forms at the Regional Operation Center and have an official sign the nomination form
- Get fingerprinted
- Bring all forms and your money order to
