Teachers of the Deaf and Hearing Impaired

Teachers of the Deaf and Hearing Impaired provide services to children with deafness or other hearing impairment such as:

  • Assist other professionals in the screening, assessment and diagnose of hearing impairments
  • Suggest alternative methods of communication and modifications to young children’s environment in order to facilitate the development of functional skills
  • Develop IFSP/IEP goals and objectives with the team
  • Provide an appropriate physical and psychological environment to establish and reinforce appropriate behaviors, attitudes and social skills
  • Help children develop receptive and expressive language skills focused on the primary communication mode used
  • Educate and support families in the use of assistive technology devises
  • Help expose and introduce young children to additional sign language vocabulary
Academic and Experience Requirement for Teachers of the Deaf and Hearing Impaired
Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education
AND
MS/MA in Special Education: Deaf and Hearing Impaired
AND
NYS Initial or Professional Teaching Certificate- Students with Disabilities
AND
A Minimum of 2 Years Experience Serving Infants and Toddlers With, or at Risk of, Developmental Delay or Disability
