The Child Care Professional Learning Specialist will be responsible for assisting in the development and delivery of various professional learning opportunities provided by the UFT, including an early literacy program designed for home-based childcare providers. The UFT is aggressively scaling up the professional development opportunities that the union provides to its childcare providers. The UFT currently offers a range of courses including those mandated by licensing requirements and those to enhance the quality of New York City’s home-based childcare sector by offering CDA, National Accreditation and an early literacy program designed to help transition children to kindergarten. The UFT is also developing new training opportunities to further improve the quality of childcare in the city. The UFT’s Child Care Providers Professional Development Program is an integral component to the union’s effort to increase school readiness and to close the achievement gap. 

Responsibilities:

* Assist in developing the UFT’s early literacy curriculum. * Conduct training sessions with childcare providers on the early literacy curriculum. * Manage and support a roster of 10 part-time home coaches, including their mastery of the content as well as appropriate coaching methods. * Conduct home visits, as needed, to support the implementation of the early literacy curriculum in childcare programs. * Assist in the development and professional learning of early literacy facilitators. * Identify and review appropriate professional development materials to support ongoing learning opportunities * Assist program staff with daily operations including, but not limited to; responding to child care provider questions both in person and on phone; assisting in preparation of course materials and ensuring all paperwork is completed in accordance with New York State regulations and program standards.

Qualifications:

t minimum a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood or Child Development or a related field with 24 credits in Early Childhood or Child Development or Childhood related course work. Master’s degree is preferred.· NYS Teaching Certification in B-2, Early Childhood or a childcare professional with state certified training experience.· 5 years of experience teaching young children in a public school or daycare setting.· 5 years of experience with adult education and adult learning.· Knowledge of Family Child Care is preferred.· Demonstrated skills in communication, team building and group dynamics.· Ability in oral and written communication is considered an asset. · Familiarity with organized labor and/or union training programs is preferred.

Over 20,000 New York City home-based Family Child Care Providers became UFT members after a successful organizing drive that gained collective-bargaining rights in 2007. The UFT represents all Licensed, Registered and Legally-Exempt Family Child Care Providers serving subsidized families in New York City. Family Child Care Providers care for children age 6 months up though age 12. Depending on licensing and staffing, Family Child Care Providers can care for two to 14 children at a time in a home-based setting.
