Overview:  University Settlement provides a comprehensive network of services to over 30,000 people of all ages living on the Lower East Side, in Brooklyn, and beyond.  Its broad network of activities includes programs that reach the whole person, whole families and whole communities.  Creative Steps, a new program of University Settlement as of September 2013, offers a play-based, child-centered curriculum with enrichment classes in music, yoga, and art. The preschool, located on the NYU campus at 4 Washington Square Village, enrolls children ages 12 months through 4 years including one full day DOE-funded Pre-K For All classroom, and offers after-school during the hours of 3-6 pm, a Spring Holiday vacation camp, and a six-week summer camp.

Responsibilities:

•    Oversee classroom staffing, paperwork and curriculum to ensure proper coverage and compliance with DOHMH and program standards
•    Oversee and maintain the implementation of high quality programming with evidence-based curricular and child outcomes, including lesson planning, observations, portfolios and Parent/Teacher conferences
•    Provide guidance, training and coaching to teaching staff on implementing lesson plans and responding to the social and emotional needs of children
•    Support UPK classroom, liaise with DOE Instructional Coordinator, and assist with report preparation for UPK 
•    Develop and implement weekly staff meetings
•    Responsible for coordinating regular in-service trainings and bi-annual staff evaluations
•    Ensure adherence to all relevant compliance regulations including renewing DOHMH permit, Building and Fire and health codes
•    Support staff in meeting the individual needs of children through individualized planning, including involving their families
•    Ensure that teachers are working in collaboration with other support services such as mental health and special needs to support the needs of children and families
•    Support the Director in recruitment, enrollment and administrative tasks
•    Assist with the review of program practices and update program plans, policies and procedures
•    Work with management and teaching staff to provide continuous services to children and families
•    Responsible for upholding Center’s philosophy and ensure proper communication with staff
•    Complete other relevant duties as requested by supervisor

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education with NYS Early Childhood Teacher Certification required
  • Three to five years of combined experience as a teacher and/or early childhood administrator/supervisor
  • Strong writing and verbal communication skills
  • Experience assisting families and children with transition to public and private kindergarten programs preferred
  • Must have proficient computer skills with knowledge of MS Office and excellent communication skills
  • Knowledge of Teaching Strategy Gold Online Child Tracking System preferred
