The Jumpstart NYC Summer Program Associate is a 15-week experience managing Jumpstart’s NYC Summer Volunteer Program in the Bronx, Queens, and Brooklyn, NY.  The position is full-time from May 2 to August 12, 2016.  The Program Associate will be responsible for all aspects of the NYC Summer Volunteer Program, including but not limited to: Interviewing and selection of summer volunteers for direct service with children; selection and orientation of partner Preschool Centers; session scheduling and logistics management; training facilitation; session quality monitoring through observation and feedback; coaching and modeling visits with the volunteer group; and working with preschool center staff to support child data collection. 

The Summer Program Associate will work closely with the Region 2 Program Team to gather feedback at all levels to improve programmatic quality and efficacy, local Jumpstart staff including Site Managers and the Community and Partnerships manager to build and manage community relationships, and an undergraduate Summer Intern who will support logistics and program.

This is a unique opportunity to work within a regional program team to significantly expand an initiative that has been piloted successfully for the past two summers.

The Summer Program Associate will be managed by a Program Director for Region 2.

Commitment and Compensation:

  • 15 weeks, May 2 through Aug 12
    • May 2-May 27: Program set-up, including:
      • Build knowledge and familiarity with Jumpstart summer curriculum
      • Interviewing and selection of summer members
      • Selection of preschool partners and facilitation of program orientations with preschool staff
      • Logistics and set-up for trainings and sessions
      • Facilitate consent form process with families
    • May 31-June 3: Summer Member Pre-Service Training Week
    • June 6-August 5: Summer Direct Service Program, including:
      • Monitoring Jumpstart sessions in the classroom, 2 days per week
      • Preparing for curriculum meetings and Hot Topic discussions, including planning, reflection and  materials preparation, 2-4 hours per week
      • Facilitation of trainings and curriculum meetings, 2-4 hours per week
      • Weekly meetings with interns, preschool staff, and regional staff, 2-4 hours per week
      • Attend up 2 family event service days, most likely held on a Saturday.
    • August 8-August 12: Program and evaluation wrap up and reporting
  • Non-exempt hourly position
  • NYC Unlimited Metrocard (value $116.50), 1 each month

Responsibilities:

The Summer Program Associate will develop a deeper understanding of Early Childhood Education by:

  • Facilitating the Jumpstart training series for volunteers and developing additional professional development trainings for volunteers when necessary throughout the summer.
  • Observing Jumpstart sessions to monitor the quality of interactions between volunteers and children during the implementation of planned curriculum.
  • Designing and facilitating in-service professional development conversations at volunteer team meetings
  • Supporting the volunteers with the design and implementation of their own lesson plans during the final phase of the program.

The Summer Program Associate will have the opportunity for leadership experience by:

  • Providing coaching and feedback to volunteers based on observations related to Jumpstart’s standards of quality.
  • Observing and supporting volunteer team meetings to monitor the quality of team collaboration, meeting facilitation, and the preparation for session implementation.
  • Providing volunteers with systematic supervision and support, consistent and responsive management, and clear ongoing communication.

The Summer Program Associate will have the opportunity to expand their leadership in Community Engagement by:

  • Building strong relationships with preschool staff
  • Representing Jumpstart at partner early childhood centers and in the community
  • Collaborating with the Community and Partnerships Manager to design and implement two summer events for families and children.

Qualifications:

  • Commitment to Jumpstart’s mission and values of learning, determination, connection, joy, and kindness.
  • Must have completed at least three years of post-secondary education in the education field or related field.  Bachelor’s degree highly preferred; Master’s coursework preferred.
  • Must be comfortable interacting with people who have a wide variety of backgrounds, experiences, and identities.
  • Able to manage several tasks and situations simultaneously
  • Able to be flexible and up to the task of expanding and managing a pilot initiative.
  • Organized, detail oriented, and able to meet tight deadlines
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Competent with Microsoft Office Applications
  • Is a self-starter and highly motivated.
  • Experience working in an early childhood setting and/or knowledge of early childhood development.  Prior Jumpstart corps member experience, team leader experience preferred.
  • Ability to work effectively and sensitively with children and families from low-income communities
  • Community service experience
  • Ability to fulfill the full summer commitment
  • Enthusiastic and positive attitude toward helping others
