Alternative Teacher Preparation Programs

Alternative Teacher Preparation (ATP) programs in New York State are equal to traditional teacher preparation programs in content, but are offered in a different format.

Individuals who already hold BA/BS degrees may enroll in an ATP program at a college or university.

Alternative Programs to NYS Teacher Certification

New York City Teaching Fellows: The NYC Teaching Fellows are people like you—accountants, nurses, recent graduates, chief executives, police officers, secretaries, artists, journalists, and retirees—who have decided to change their lives and teach in the schools that need teachers most. NYC Teaching Fellows prepare for a new career in teaching by completing a subsidized master's degree program in education.

Teach For America: Graduating college seniors and recent college graduates with strong leadership skills are encouraged to apply. Teach for America is looking for individuals with energy and enthusiasm who will excel as teachers during their 2-year commitments and effect long-term change in the schools where they teach.

Teacher Opportunity Corps: Teacher Opportunity Corps (TOC) enhances the preparation of teachers and prospective teachers by addressing the learning needs of "at risk" students: those in danger of failing academically or dropping out. TOC also seeks to increase the participation rate of historically underrepresented and economically disadvantaged individuals in teaching careers.
TOC serves full-time undergraduate and graduate students, and part-time graduate students completing the requirements for Initial, Provisional, and Permanent Certification.
Note: TOC is not available at all colleges. When you apply, ask if the college has a TOC program.
