Teacher Development Programs
Teacher Development Programs encourage and support the professional development of teachers at the pre-service and in-service levels and recruit and retain teachers for local school districts. Some of those programs are:
- AmeriCorps: Managed by the Corporation for National and Community Service, AmeriCorps allows individuals of all ages and backgrounds to earn educational awards in exchange for one year of community service. Get more information here or call: 1-800-942-2677
- Call Back to Teaching: encourages experienced, certified teachers, who have been previously employed by the NYC Department of Education, to return to teaching in a full-time capacity. For more information e-mail: CallBacktoTeaching@nycboe.net
- The Loan Forgiveness Program: is open to prospective NYC Department of Education employees who are prepared to fill positions in the critical shortage areas. To be eligible, employees must meet all NYS certification requirements. As of February 2005, new employees working in one of the designated shortage areas are also eligible. - Teach for America: members attend a rigorous pre-service summer training program for 5 weeks in New York City. Teach for America then places teachers, grouped in districts and schools, in 5 geographical areas in NYC. While completing their Teach for America commitment, members work toward Permanent Certification for free. New York members enroll in a fully-funded master’s degree program at Pace University, Columbia’s Teacher’s College or Bank Street College of Education. Members earn their degrees while teaching. - The Teaching Opportunity Program: is a collaborative program between The City University of New York (CUNY) and the NYC Department of Education. The program provides stipends, education awards, and special training to highly qualified graduates seeking to pursue careers in teaching. - Teachers of Tomorrow Program: is open to newly hired teachers with NYS teacher certification who are assigned to a School Under Registration Review (SURR) or a designated high-need school. - The United Federation of Teachers (UFT)
- Reduced-tuition graduate courses
- The UFT Teacher Center, in partnership with area colleges, runs a virtual university for NYC Department of Education teachers. The credits earned can count toward salary gaps and, if the university approves, can apply toward the master’s degree needed to meet the Board of Education's maximum requirements.
- Second differential "P courses"
- Newly hired NYC Department of Education teachers, who already have their master’s degree, can
take advantage of the union-negotiated, no-cost or low-cost courses
