About Tammy

Tammy is currently a kindergarten Teacher in the Village Community School where the classroom team strives to create a community of learners and a caring environment that is nurturing and full of discovery. As a classroom teacher, she is continually seeking new learning experiences, not only formally through advanced degree programs, but informally as well. She is a recent graduate of Hunter College where she received a Master's of Science in Early Childhood Education, Summa Cum Laude. She has also finished coursework on an advanced degree certificate in Gifted and Talented Education. She hopes this will inform her teaching, as she strives for best practices in her work. Tammy is the current president of Kappa Delta Pi (KDP), the Education honor society at Hunter College. This honor society is a great resource as it helps new teachers grow professionally. With the help of the executive committee she has planned and implemented professional development workshops on first teaching jobs and how to organize resumes and portfolios.

Tammy is currently a board member and the Secretary of the New York City Association for the Education of Young Children (NYCAEYC). She works in many capacities for this organization but has recently lent her time and efforts to co-chair the 2009 Annual Conference and is serving in the same capacity for the upcoming 2010 Annual Conference.

Tammy has also written several articles both for the NYCAEYC and NYSAEYC newsletters. She recently contributed an article to the NAEYC publication, Teaching Young Children, and is currently writing an article on democracy in the early childhood classroom for ChildCare Exchange.

When able to find time to volunteer with other organizations, Tammy has done so by splitting her time between the Actors Studio Workshop to help homeless children develop creatively through art and story writing and by serving as a Girl Scout Troop leader working with girls aged eight to eleven, planning and implementing activities that empower and inspire. She lives in Brooklyn with her partner Christopher and pets, Mostly (the Cat) and Franklin (the Red Ear Slider Turtle). Tammy is proud of the work she has accomplished and looks forward to further serving the children and families who enter her classroom, as well as serving the education field as a whole.
