Description:

The Head Start Family Assistant will work with and advocate for and Head Start families in accordance with Head Start Program Performance Standards. The Family Assistant will perform a variety of duties designed to aid the parents in their role as their child's first and primary educator. They will serve as a link between the Head Start program (nutrition, health, education) and the family, and they also link the families to community resources.

Responsibilities:

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
* Recruiting and enrolling children and families.
* Developing and maintaining a referral system for assisting with family needs and goals and to empower families.
* Developing and maintaining working relationships with community resources/partners.
* Assisting in encouraging parents to be involved in all components and programs of the center.
* Assisting families in obtaining proper health, dental and nutrition services, and maintaining current and accurate records of all medical and dental screenings.
* Establishing and maintaining open communication with families, staff and community partners.
* Assisting with the implementation and facilitation of parent and staff workshops.

Qualifications:

* Must have an AA Degree or higher in Human Services/Social Work, or have an FDC (Family Development Credential).
* Must have one (1) years’ experience in a social service and/or preschool setting.
* Must have the knowledge and ability to relate to families from diverse cultures.
* Must be able to work with community groups and partners.
* Must be computer literate and be able to utilize Microsoft Word and Excel, as well as other various databases.
*Must have good communication skills and be fluent in verbal and written English.
*Must have a flexible schedule.
* Must be a U.S. citizen or have a green card.
* Must complete screenings from the NYC Department of Investigation, NYC Department of Education and the NY State Central Registry. The DOI fingerprint fee is $122.50, the DOE fingerprint fee is $135.00 and the NYS Central Registry fee is $25.00. All fees are the responsibility of the candidate.
