Description:

Students are between the ages of 18 months and 5 years old at the start of the school year in September. The Music Specialist maintains a 2 or 3 day per week schedule, teaching 20 to 30 minute music classes for all students.

Teachers at Barrow Street are practitioners of progressive education within the context of a social studies based program and a mission driven school derived from a Reggio Emilia and Bank Street pedagogy.   

Responsibilities:

The Music Specialist is responsible for:

  • Creating and implementing a developmentally appropriate music curriculum 
  • Creating clear routines and structures to manage music classes; Responding and adapting to the varied needs of students in an emotionally responsive way
  • Maintaining regular communication with administrators and classroom teachers about curriculum and the progress of classroom groups and individuals
  • Meeting with colleagues and administrators to plan, discuss students and supports, reflect on teaching practices, and give/receive feedback
  • Actively observing and documenting student learning experiences through occasional written portfolio pieces and contributing to student narrative reports mid-year
  • Engaging in ongoing professional growth, cultural competency, and self-reflective practice

Cultural competence, willingness and ability to work collaboratively, and excellent communication skills are essential.

  • Demonstrated experience in teaching early childhood music required
  • Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree, or equivalent experience preferred
  • Extensive training and experience in a music-based modality, like playing an instrument, singing, or similar 
  • Must demonstrate an understanding of basic music concepts and be able to communicate those concepts in a developmentally appropriate manner with toddlers and preschoolers 
  • Working history demonstrating flexibility, creativity, initiative and collaboration
  • Demonstrated history of being a lifelong learner who continues their own growth through professional development

Compensation

  • $30,000 - $50,000 annual salary, commensurate with experience and weekly schedule. 
  • Additional salary can be earned by working our summer program (9:00 - 1:00 for 3 weeks in June and 3 weeks in July) if interested (not mandatory)
